PROPOSED REPOWER OF BURGAR HILL WIND FARM

When Burgar Hill was first selected as one of the first locations in the UK to test wind electricity generation, 3 turbines were installed on the land, including one 200kw turbine, one 300kw turbine and one of the world's first 3MW grid connected turbines.

Currently there are 6 turbines on Burgar Hill, producing approximately 12.5MW, with 5 of these being on land owned by Burgar Hill Renewables Limited, generating approx. 11MW.

The proposed repower would see the 5 turbines on land belonging to Burgar Hill Renewables Limited being decommissioned and replaced with newer technology.  At this early stage, options are still being explored, but the current proposal is for the erection of turbines with tip heights of up to 200m.  The site could go from generating approximately 11MW up to 30MW.  Existing infrastructure would be used where possible.

PROJECT MILESTONES SO FAR

Background

Burgar Hill Renewables and Thrive have already enjoyed a longstanding and constructive relationship, and look forward to continuing this through the life of the repower.

Scoping Report

The first step in the wind farm’s application for planning consent is the scoping process. The scoping report was submitted to Orkney Islands Council on the 26th May 2025.

Responses to this scoping report from key consultees (local and national) will help define the required studies needed to complete the Environmental Impact Assessment Report (EIA), which will be submitted along with the planning application, intended to be submitted by the end of 2025.

Public engagement

The first public consultation was held on 1st July 2025, where the project was introduced and discussed with interested parties in the community.  The site design is still indicative at this stage.  Feedback from the Scoping Report process and these conversations will be used to inform the planning application that is submitted later in the year.

The boards shared at the consultation event and the relevant feedback form can be found below.

There will be another public consultation held on 17th September where we intend to share our final proposed site layout, but in the meantime if you have any feedback, thoughts or would like to suggest a way that the Community Benefit can be used, please get in touch.
